Firstly, a big THANK YOU to Joyce Amirahmadi who has edited and produced our monthly newsletters in recent years. She has done a great job and we are very grateful to her for all the work and effort she has put in. THANK YOU JOYCE.
This newsletter is being produced by the Vice Chair (Christine Isles) but from November we are grateful to Sin Sung, a relatively new member, who has kindly offered to take on this job. Thank you Sin.
MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING – OCTOBER 2026
Wednesday, October 21st: Our next meeting!
We are looking forward to seeing you at our next general meeting! Mark your calendars and come and join us for an afternoon of catch-ups and a fascinating presentation.
• Date & Time: Wednesday, 21st October 2026 at 2:00 pm
• Venue: St. Andrew’s Church Hall, Merton Road, Slough SL1 1QW
To make your arrival as smooth as possible, please take note of our parking arrangements:
• On-Site Parking: The small car park at the rear of the church is strictly reserved for members with mobility difficulties or those transporting heavy equipment.
• Alternative Parking: Other attendees are kindly asked to use the nearby pay-and-display car parks, or Upton Court Park, which is a pleasant 10-minute walk away.
• Slough Borough Council has generously agreed that you do not need to register with Ringo between 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm when attending our regular monthly meetings (third Wednesday of the month) or the monthly Local History meetings (third Monday of the month). If you struggle with the Ringo app, this is a wonderful relief! Last month 4 cars received parking fines in error during our monthly meeting but the Council has cancelled them and we are hoping that there will be no further incidents of people receiving parking fines when they should not be.
The presentation on 21st October is entitled “Flights of Fancy with the Flute” and is likely to be part talk and part concert. Annie Parker (a classically trained flautist) and Stuart Hall (guitarist) will present a musical journey through the world of the flute. There will be an introduction to the different members of the Flute family, a little bit of history and a little trip around the different musical genres in which it finds itself.
Also at this meeting we have a very special exhibition of artworks produced by members of the various u3a art groups. These artists have developed and improved their skills with the guidance and encouragement of their peers and group leaders. Members are invited to look at the artwork and chat with the artists and maybe find out more about how to join one of the art groups.
Liz Jones will also be selling Christmas cards in aid of Save the Children so do come prepared.

Here are members of one of our art groups in discussion.
Below is a photo of the Gardening group taken at the end of August when they visited the Venus Garden at Windsor Castle. Everything still looked very brown but there was lots of colour (purples, pinks and whites) in the hedge edged beds. The castle has its own water source! It was an opportunity to see which plants cope with the hot, dry summer. On 28th September the group visited Winkworth Arboretum where there was plenty of evidence that Autumn has arrived.
