Lets start with an Overview of Slough u3a

  • A Community for Lifelong Learning and Friendship in Slough

Slough u3a (University of the Third Age) is a vibrant, volunteer-led organisation based in Slough, Berkshire, dedicated to providing learning, social, and leisure opportunities for people who are retired or semi-retired. Affiliated with the national u3a movement, Slough u3a welcomes members from all backgrounds who are keen to continue learning, make new friends, and share their skills and interests in a sociable environment.

  • Purpose and Ethos

Slough u3a operates on the principle of self-help learning, where members both share skills and learn from each other. There are no entry qualifications or exams, and the emphasis is on enjoyment and personal enrichment. The organisation encourages lifelong learning, enabling members to pursue new hobbies, develop skills, and remain mentally and socially active during later life.

  • Interest Groups and Activities

A wide range of interest groups are on offer, covering topics such as languages, history, science, art, literature, music, gardening, walking, and more. These groups are typically run by members for members, fostering a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Activities may take place in person or online, depending on the needs of each group.

  • Monthly Meetings, Outings, and Events

Slough u3a holds regular monthly meetings featuring guest speakers, topical presentations, and opportunities for members to socialise. These meetings provide a focal point for the organisation and a chance for members to learn about new subjects and developments within the u3a community.

Outings are an integral part of Slough u3a’s annual calendar, offering members a chance to explore new places, enjoy cultural experiences, and strengthen friendships in a relaxed setting. Recent outings have included visits to historic landmarks, museums, art galleries, and beautiful gardens both within Berkshire and further afield. These trips are carefully organised to cater to a range of interests and often include guided tours, group lunches, or opportunities to attend exhibitions and performances. Outings are a wonderful way for members to discover more about local and national heritage, as well as to enjoy shared experiences outside the usual meeting spaces. Transport is typically arranged to ensure outings are accessible and enjoyable for all, with details communicated well in advance.

In addition to outings, Slough u3a organises social events and special interest days throughout the year, helping to create a sense of community and providing further opportunities for members to get involved.

  • Membership and Involvement

Membership is open to anyone who is retired or semi-retired and wishes to join a friendly, welcoming group of like-minded individuals. Slough u3a is a member-driven organisation, relying on volunteers to run groups, organise activities, and manage its affairs. New members are encouraged not only to participate but also to share their own knowledge and perhaps lead a group or activity.
