July 2016 Meeting
[This archive record may have been truncated]
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 20 July – Leslie Grout on “Burial Grounds of London”
Where can you find the resting places of Marks and Spencer? The answer: Highgate Cemetery, north London. But these are not the founders of the famous clothing chain but Karl Marx, pioneer of communism, and English philosopher and scientist Herbert Spencer, whose memorials stand directly opposite one another. A talk, on the subject of Burial Grounds of London, will be given by former Mastermind winner Leslie Grout, of Windsor. Leslie won the famous TV knowledge contest in 1981 – then only the tenth person to do so – when hosted by Magnus Magnusson. Since then he’s been in demand on the talk circuit, sharing his knowledge of topics such as Windsor Castle and St George’s Chapel. Picture shows Leslie in 1981 with the Mastermind Trophy.
