September 2016

Our next meeting will be on 21 September 2016

Bourne End resident Pamela Harman has been writing poetry since she was at school. In particular, she likes to record aspects of her life and the world around her in the form of light-hearted odes. Some years ago a friend suggested she shared her gift for verse with the wider public and she began performing to various Women’s Institutes and other groups around the area. Now it is the turn of Slough U3A to be entertained. Pamela will be giving a talk entitled “Odes – A Light-hearted Look at Life” at the next monthly U3A meeting to be held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church Hall, Merton Road, Slough, on Wednesday 21st September from 2-4pm.

Entry to the meeting is free to members and first-time visitors.

Upcoming meetings:-

  • 19 October – U3A ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – with speaker Colin Oakes on “Pepys, Plague and Fire”
  • 16 November – Simon Williams on “Eyewitness”
  • 14 December – Christmas special (watch this space)!

Slough University of the Third Age welcomes retired and semi-retired people – those in their “third age” – who are interested in participating in any of our activities or groups.

Newcomers can find out more about us by coming to one of our monthly meetings. Doors open at 1:30 pm with announcements and speaker starting at 2pm. Towards the end of the meeting refreshments are available, and there is opportunity to find out about activities and planned outings. Parking nearby is available at Hatfield Road multi-storey (£1.10 for 2 hours) or there is free parking in Upton Court Park.

U3A Announcements

Subscriptions – annual membership was due for renewal on 1st September. In case you have not yet renewed, the subscription for 2016/2017 will be £20 – please bring a cheque with you to our next meeting, or pay by bank transfer.

Our first AGM is coming up in October – This is quite an important event in the life of our U3A; there are a number of formal decisions which must be voted by the members. The temporary Steering Committee which has been managing for the first year must dissolve and the members must choose a new Committee to manage for the future. We will also present the first year’s accounts.

Please can you consider if you would like to become a member of the new committee? Any member of the current committee would be happy to talk to you and let you know what is involved.

Helping out at meetings – we may be a bit short staffed at the meeting on September 21st as a number of our regulars will be on holiday. We’d be grateful if those who are able could allow a little more time to help with setting up and packing up, and to greet newcomers.
