what3words is an innovative GPS-like system designed to make navigation and location sharing more accessible and precise. It divides the entire world into a grid of 57 trillion squares, each measuring 3 meters by 3 meters. Each square is given a unique identifier made up of three random words, such as “apple.banana.orange” or “table.chair.lamp.” This method replaces traditional street addresses, which can be ambiguous, particularly in areas without clear signage. Instead of providing a long address or GPS coordinates, users can simply share their three-word location. This is especially useful in emergency.
